What is the deep tech accelerator?

The deep tech accelerator is Greater Manchester's flagship programme for researchers, technical founders and early-stage deep tech ventures looking to turn breakthrough science and engineering into investment-ready businesses.

Over six months, you'll receive £25,000 of equity-free funding, expert commercialisation support, mentoring and training on pitching to investors; all designed specifically for science-based ventures. From AI and advanced materials to life sciences and beyond, we're supporting the ideas shaping our future.

This programme is open to organisations across Greater Manchester, not just those affiliated with the University of Manchester.

Deep tech ventures face different challenges to traditional startups.

Areas of interest include:

Advanced materials, manufacturing and nanotechnology
Quantum computing and photonics
Artificial intelligence and data infrastructure
Biotechnology, life sciences and health technologies
Climate and energy technologies
Robotics and automation
Space and aerospace technologies

Deep tech refers to technologies built on significant scientific discoveries or engineering advances that create new capabilities and solve real-world problems. These innovations often require substantial technical development and specialist expertise before they can reach the market.

WHO'S ELIGBLE TO APPLY?

We welcome applications from technical founders, research-driven startups, and researchers exploring commercialisation pathways. Applications from across all of Greater Manchester are welcome.

To be eligible, applicants should have moved beyond the idea or early research stage:  

Researchers: should have explored or attempted commercialisation of their research, not solely producing academic work.  

Non-university founders: should have progressed past the idea stage, ideally with prototypes developed or market testing underway.  

Applicants should be at least TRL (Technology Readiness Level) 3-4.  

We’re looking to support those who are already on a path toward turning their science and technology into investment-ready deep tech startups. 

Do you need to be affiliated with the University of Manchester to apply?

No, applications from across Greater Manchester are welcome.

Do I need to be affiliated with a university within Manchester?

No, we are happy to consider applications from anyone in Greater Manchester that meet the basic eligibility criteria.

I don't know if my idea/company would be considered deep tech, can I still apply?

Can I apply if I'm based outside of Greater Manchester?

Unfortunately, this accelerator is only open to those based in Greater Manchester.

I haven't registered my company yet; can I still apply?

Yes, we can consider applications from individuals/teams that have not yet incorporated a company as long as there is an evident intention to register by the start of the accelerator.

When do applications close?

Applications close at 3pm on Monday 19 October.

When will the accelerator run?

The accelerator will run from November 2026 to April 2027. Please see key dates for further information.
